ABSTRACT

Ayurveda translates as ‘life science’. Its knowledge is not limited to medicine, cure or therapy and is forlaypersons, households, communities, as well as for physicians. Throughout its evolutionary history,Ayurveda and Local Health Traditions have reciprocally influenced each other. In modern times, theinfluence of biomedicine on Ayurveda is leading to its medicalisation. Over the past century, theintroduction and perspective of biomedicine into India has made the human being an object for positiveknowledge, a being who can be understood with scientific reason and can be governed and controlledthrough medical knowledge. This paper explores how this shift towards medicalisation is affecting theknowledge, teaching, and practice of Ayurveda. It examines the impact and contribution of processes likestandardisation, professionalisation, bio-medicalisation and pharmaceuticalisation on Ayurveda education, knowledge, practice and policies. To maintain health and wellbeing Ayurveda's ancient knowledgeand practice needs to be applied at individual, community and health care provider levels and not belimited to the medical system. The current over medicalisation of society is a potential threat to humanhealth and well-being. Ayurveda and LHT knowledge can provide essential teachings and practices tocounter-balance this current trend through encouraging a population's self-reliance in its health.© 2018 Transdisciplinary University, Bangalore and World Ayurveda Foundation. ABSTRACT

Aims: The development of entrustable professional activities (EPAs) in minimally invasive surgery (MIS) for undergraduates is a need in Colombia. The available evidence is limited. This study aims to describe the preliminary experience with an intervention oriented to this need, embedded in the framework of a competence-based education model (CBE). Materials and Methods: An intervention was designed for the development of EPAs in MIS oriented to the development of attitudes, knowledge and practical skills in medical students. Intervention was delivered through an extended inverted classroom approach. Pre- and postintervention measures were performed by using the Team-STEPPS questionnaire (attitudes), knowledge assessments and OSATS (practical skills). Comparisons were performed by t-test tests (p < 0.05) and the effect size of the intervention was calculated by the Cohen d test. Finally, the student's satisfaction was evaluated. Results: A total of 99 students participated in the study. The intervention showed statistically significant differences (p < 0.05), and great effect on attitudes, knowledge and practical skills (d > 0.80). Likewise, high student satisfaction was evidenced. Discussion: Interactive instructional design fosters development of EPAs in MIS for medical undergraduates. These results are similar to those reported in other interventions under the CBE model. Conclusion: Our intervention showed positive effects on competences oriented to the development of EPAs in MIS for the future graduate. Still is necessary to assess these competencies in real practice and at the end of medical career, in order to evaluate if these activities can be totally reliable to the participants in their future professional practice.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

The higher education provider in this country has established a platform for training of biomedical scientist at the undergraduate level. The program provides a sound foundation to explore the science of biomedicine and complement the healthcare system by preparing medical laboratory professionals as a platform to apply their knowledge. Apart from medical laboratory and healthcare service, graduates of the program can also explore and adapt in regard to employment in other interesting niche areas of academic and industry. This effort can further culminate into greater support and further strengthening of the discipline

ABSTRACT

This research was performed to investigate the effects of NEP (Nutritional Education Practice) program developed by KHyDDI (Korea Hypertension Diabetes Daegu Initiative) for hypertension and diabetes patients. The subjects were 116 patients (hypertension 70, diabetes 46) who had completed basic education program at the education information center and four-session program was implemented for them. Nutrient intake was analyzed and compared before and after the program by 24-hr recall method and evaluate weight, waist circumference, body fat, blood pressure and eating habits in terms of nutrition knowledge, eating behavior, salty taste assessment. The improved results after the program were observed in weight, waist circumference, body fat ratio, blood pressure, slightly salty taste in salty taste assessment, nutrition knowledge, eating behavior, sodium, energy, carbohydrate and protein intake ratio to total energy (p < 0.001). Therefore, this program is effective in the improvement of weight, waist circumference and eating behavior, and the continued management would lead to the prevention of cardio-cerebrovascular diseases in the community.
